KDP Keyword Byte Counter
Type your keywords into all 7 slots to check both byte and character count against Amazon's 50-limit per box, live as you type.
Checks both byte count (UTF-8) and character count, and flags a box as over limit if either one exceeds 50. Accented letters and non-Latin characters can take more than one byte even though they're a single character on screen, so the two counts won't always match.
Common questions
Is the limit 50 characters or 50 bytes?
Amazon documents it as 50 characters, but the limit is commonly understood to behave byte-based underneath, which matters for accented or non-Latin text. This tool checks both so you're covered either way.
Why would a short-looking keyword still be too long?
Accented letters like café or naïve, or non-Latin characters, can take more than one byte each even though they look like a single character. A word that looks short can still push you over.
Can each box hold a full phrase?
Yes, each of the 7 boxes can hold a full phrase, not just one word, as long as it fits within the limit.
Why this matters
Getting a keyword box rejected at upload, or worse, silently truncated, wastes one of only 7 slots you get. Checking the real byte count before you paste keywords in catches the accented-character edge case that a simple character count misses.
For picking what to actually put in these boxes, KDP Workspace's free keyword guide covers what's prohibited and what actually helps readers find your book.
