Common questions
How is KDP paperback royalty calculated?
Royalty = (list price × royalty rate) minus printing cost. The rate is 60% at $9.99 or above, and 50% at $9.98 or below.
Why is there a 50% and 60% royalty rate?
Amazon draws the line at $9.99 for the US marketplace. List at $9.99 or higher and you get 60% of that price minus printing cost; below that, it's 50%.
What counts as a large trim size?
Anything bigger than 6.12" x 9" uses higher, large-trim printing costs. Common large sizes are 7x10, 8x10, and 8.5x11.
Does this include Kindle eBook royalties?
No, this is paperback only. eBooks use a separate 35% or 70% structure based on file size and price, not page count or paper type.
Why this matters
It's easy to price a book based on what looks competitive and only find out later that the printing cost ate almost all of it. Running the real numbers before you publish means no surprises on your first royalty statement.
If you're managing a whole catalog, KDP Workspace's free royalty calculator handles this automatically per book, across every marketplace, alongside your trim size and margins.
